What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is based on psychodynamic theory, which means we explore how unconscious and conscious thoughts and feelings influence who we are. An Art Therapist won’t judge your artwork, or diagnose you from what you draw. The goal is to create a space where you can explore your unconscious and come to understand, through support and guidance, your own unique inner world.
Art Therapy aims to provide a safe space where emotions, experiences and thoughts can be confidentially shared. This means that unless there is a danger of harm to yourself or others, everything made and talked about with your therapist will be kept private and stored safely. It is your choice who you tell about what you make in art therapy.

The therapeutic relationship is a key part of any therapy. The therapist’s role is to hold a space for you and what you are working on.
